The Big Game
What Stanford and Cal began on March 10, 1892 in San Francisco is now one of the greatest rivalries in college football. The Big Game, the annual war on the gridiron between the University of California and Stanford University, will enter its third century when the teams teams battle for the 103rd time on November 18, 2000 at Cal's Memorial Stadium. The first Big Game was held before an overflow crowd of 20,000. Stanford manager Herbert Hoover, later to become the 31st President of the United States, printed 10,000 tickets for the 15,000-seat Haight Street baseball grounds in San Francisco. However, as the crowd filled the stadium, Hoover ran out of tickets and was forced to collect coins at the gate and put them in empty wash tubs and boxes. When the team captains were on the field and the referee asked for the ball, there was one small problem. No one remembered to bring the ball. After the game, Hoover and the Cal manager counted $30,000 in receipts - enough to finance the team for the next season. The Big Game was born. In a series that dates back over a century, the Cardinal holds the lead after the first 102 games, 52-39-11. But, it has been a series that has been very close with just 135 (1,625-1,490) points separating the two teams. MORE...
