Nov. 29, 2004 BERKELEY - Cal crew's freshmen squad competed in the Head of the American Regatta on Sat. October 30th. They competed in 2 events, bringing home three medals: a Gold, Silver, and Bronze. The Frosh Four (cox: Jacob Zuniga, Stroke: Ryan McQuaid, 3: Ryan Beverly, 2: Blake Gourly, Bow: Colin Foe-Parker) competed in an open four event; against many teams' varsity squads, and came home with a Bronze medal for their efforts with a time of 18:12. The Frosh Eights ("A" Cox: Steven OStrow, Stroke: Charlie SMith, 7: Marko Marjanovic, 6: David Naughton, 5: Max Wyatt, 4: Dan O'Connell, 3: Nick Bea, 2: Matt Eger, Bow: Dean Horwitz) ("B" Cox: Alex Francis, Stroke: Sebastian Scheiter, 7: Greg Mason, 6: Gordon Getsinger, 5: Jan Tize, 4: Kyle Atkinson, 3: Antonio Brecevich, 2: David Mozaffarian, Bow: Lowell Fleming) went one, two in the Collegiate Novice Eight event to bring home the Gold and Silver with times of 15:49 and 16:35 respectively. "It was really a good day of racing for the whole squad," said Freshman assistant coach Pat McGrath. "We've got excellent depth this year, and we're all excited that we can get 20 oarsmen out there to compete at a high level. The times for our two 8's were pretty good (15:49 and 16:35). But then the times were pretty fast across the board at this year's regatta, so it's tough to say that this was anything more than a solid performance. I also thought that the 4 did an admirable job to finish 3rd in the Open 4 category, against more experienced and, frankly, stronger competition." The Cal Men next compete at the San Diego Crew Classic, April 2nd and 3rd.
