HENLEY-ON-THAMES, England - California's freshman crew came up just short of reaching the final of the Temple Challenge Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta, losing a tight race to Cornell's lightweight varsity Saturday.

Cornell led the semifinal match race from the start and crossed the finish line in 6:24, three-quarters of a boat length ahead of the Bears. The Big Red will face Oxford Brookes University "A" for the championship Sunday.

Despite the loss, Cal advanced one round further than the Bears did last year.
