The California men's crew freshman 8+ that claimed the 2011 IRA national championship defeated the University of Warwick in the first round of the Temple Challenge Cup at the Henley Regatta, early Wednesday morning at Henley-on-the-Thames, England. The Golden Bears advanced to the second round of the 32-boat tournament.

Cal knocked off Warwick by four and three quarters lengths. In the second round on Thursday morning, the Bears will square off against the University of Groningen, Holland, which beat Durham University by two and three quarters lengths on Wednesday.

Cal and Groningen will race at 2 a.m. PT Thursday morning in the round of 16.
