BERKELEY - Former California men's rower Olivier Siegelaar has been named to the Dutch National team and will represent The Netherlands in the men's eight at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London, as recently announced by Dutch head coach Rene Mijnders.
Siegelaar is no stranger to Olympic competition. He competed for The Netherlands in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China, rowing in the three seat in the eight, helping the Dutch finish fourth. His boat finished behind the third-place U.S. eight coached by current Cal head coach and U.S. assistant coach Mike Teti. Current Cal assistant coach Wyatt Allen raced with the U.S. eight in that race, as well.
While rowing for the Golden Bears, Siegelaar rowed on the varsity eight. He was a member of Cal's 2010 IRA National Champion boat. He was named to the Pac-10 all-conference team last season.
Continuing Cal's tradition of not only excellent athletics but also superb academics, Siegelaar had a lot of success at Cal while also majoring in mechanical engineering. Finishing his athletic eligibility following the 2011 campaign, Siegelaar will return to Cal next year to graduate.
Below are the rest of the Cal men's crew Olympic hopefuls.
