CHERRY HILL, N.J. -Full Results
Fourth-ranked California men's crew opened the IRA National Championships Thursday at Copper River in Cherry Hill, N.J., with all five boats advancing to Friday's semifinals. The varsity four, open four and freshman eight boats picked up wins in their first-day heats.
Four of the five boats advanced in the preliminary heats. Only the varsity eight was forced to qualify through the repechage race after finishing third in its heat and fifth among all boats. Regardless of having to race twice on Thursday, the varsity eight will compete in the semifinals on Friday.
"Everyone performed pretty well," head coach Mike Teti said, "We were great in fours and the freshman eight. The JV had a good race. The varsity eight was a little bit off; they had to go through the repechage, but they were better the second time around. We have some tough semis tomorrow, but our guys are up for the challenge. We'll give it our best shot tomorrow."
The largest margin of victory for the Bears came in the varsity four, as Cal topped second-place Harvard by 10 seconds, 6:34.31-6:44.4.
The freshman eight and open four boats also won decisively. The freshman eight crossed the finish line at 5:51.38, nearly seven seconds ahead of Northeastern (5:58.02). In the open four, Cal garnered a winning time of 6:32.79. Cornell took second at 6:38.91.
While the junior varsity eight did not win its heat, the second-place finish behind Harvard (5:54.94) was enough for the Bears to advance to the semifinals. Cal clocked a time of 5:57.07.
The only boat that had to race twice on Thursday was the varsity eight. In the preliminary heat, it was a close battle to the finish line. Harvard claimed first at 5:50.05, with Boston University taking second (5:51.03) and then Cal followed in third at 5:52.85. It would not get any easier for the Bears in the repechage, but this time, Cal prevailed and advanced. The Bears posted a time of 5:38.92, topping Syracuse (5:40.46) and Yale (5:40.65).
The competition will be strong in the semifinals on Friday. In the varsity eight, Cal will be joined by Pac-12 foe and top-ranked Washington.
The IRA Championships continue on Friday and conclude with the grand finals on Saturday.
