CAMDEN, N.J. - After a long day of racing, the Cal men's varsity eight advanced to the semifinals of the Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championship Regatta at the Cooper River, Friday, May 28.
One of the pre-race favorites, the Bears failed to advance directly from the heat to the semi after finishing second, one boat-length behind Northeastern. The Bears recovered from the morning heat and qualified for the semis during the afternoon repechage (second chance) session when Cal overpowered crews from New Hampshire, Oregon State and Rutgers.
"I feel we missed an opportunity this morning," said coach Steve Gladstone. "When its 85 and humid, its always better to advance directly to the semis. The varsity has a full 24 hours to recover, but the racing will be tougher tomorrow."
After the heats, Gladstone adjusted his varsity eight lineup and replaced Graham Taylor, who is suffering from the flu. His replacement, junior team-captain, John Allbin, moved up from the two-seat of the JV, and blended in well with the varsity eight during the rep which Cal led from start to finish.
Friday, Cal will be up against Eastern Sprints Champion Penn, Princeton, Wisconsin, Boston Univ., and Navy with three crews advancing to the varsity grand final.
In other racing on the day, the JV eight suffered its first loss on the season finishing third behind Wisconsin and Penn. Like the varsity, the JV will have a chance to redeem themselves in a repechage Friday morning when they take on Rutgers, Drexel, Brown and Syracuse with only the winner advancing to the grand final.
Cal's freshman eight remains undefeated on the season after a good race that the Bears controlled from the drop of the flag. The Cal frosh race again Friday afternoon in the semifinals. The Bears primary competition in the frosh semi figures to be Rutgers, Brown and Wisconsin.
The Cal open four's success was similar to that of the freshman as the Bears cruised to a four second win over Wisconsin. The win put the four in tomorrow's semifinal.
