THIS WEEK: Sun., May 18: Pac-10 Championships (Lake Natoma, Sacramento)-- All-Day
NEXT REGATTAS: Men: May 29-31: IRA National Championship Regatta (Cooper River, Camden, NJ)--All Day
Women: May 30-June 1: NCAA Rowing Championships (Lake Natoma, Sacramento)-- All-Day
The California men's and women's crews travel to Sacramento's Lake Natoma for the Pac-10 Rowing Championships on Sunday, May 18. The heats will be contested between 7:30 a.m. and 10:50 a.m. Finals are slated to begin at 12:10 p.m. and continue through 3:20 p.m. when the women's varsity eights grand final completes the schedule.
OUTLOOK FOR THE BEARS:
The Bears look to be in contention for the Pac-10 championship in most races on the schedule. Cal enters the regatta as the No. 1-seeded crew for the M-varsity 4+, No. 2 seeds in the M&W varsity 8+, M-JV 8+, and M&W frosh/novice 8+. In the women's varsity competition, Cal looks to cut into the eight second margin Washington held over it at the dual, May 3, while the men's varsity and JV, each need to make up approximately two seconds in time differential to Washington.
NCAA BERTH ON THE LINE:
The first ever NCAA Women's Rowing Championships will be held at Lake Natoma, May 30-June 1. Based on the selection procedure, four berths will be extended to the-top ranked regional teams with an additional four at large team berths available. Eight additional bids will be given to boats for competition in the varsity eight and varsity four races. Cal's varsity figures to be in position to get the nod, however, the JV's and varsity four's future depends on thier finish at Pac-10's. A strong showing across the board could move the Bears into position for a team berth.
RACING FORMAT:
After a two year hiatus, the Pac-10 Rowing Championships return to Lake Natoma in Sacramento, CA. The past two years, a Henley-style championships pitted crews in dual races with the winners advancing through a tournament bracket. Lake Natoma, offers a fully buoyed seven lane course enabling the Pac-10 conference to extend invitations to guests institutions for up to 21 entries in each of the events on the competition schedule. Heats and finals are scheduled for men's and women's varsity, JV, and frosh/novice eights, as well as, varsity fours.
STANFORD DUAL RE-CAP:
On May 3, the Cal men's and women's varsity crews picked up wins over crews from Stanford in dual racing at Redwood Shores, CA. In the Men's varsity event, Cal jumped out to an early lead and was not challenged the rest of the way as the Bears cruised to an easy 11-second win over the Cardinal. In the women's varsity race, things were much closer in the early going as Cal edged out to a 2-second lead over the first 500 meter of the course. The crew maintained its momentum and continued increase the margin finishing seven seconds ahead of Stanford. In other racing, the trend of big Cal victories continued in the men's JV, men's and women's Frosh/Novice, the Men's second frosh and the novice women's coxed four. The only win Stanford was able to take home on the day was the women's JV.
CAL COACHES:
Regarded as one of the nation's premier coaches, Steve Gladstone returns to Cal this season for his second stint as men's head coach while serving as the Director of Cal Crew. During his previous tenure from 1972-80, Gladstone guided the Bears to three undefeated dual race seasons, a Pac-10 championship and an Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) championship. Between 1981-94, Gladstone served as the Director of Rowing Operations at Brown where his crews amassed four Eastern Sprints Championships, five IRA championships, and two National Collegiate Rowing Championship titles.
Head coach Anna Considine is in her fourth year of guiding women's crew at Cal. She arrived at Cal after spending eight years at Boston University serving as head coach between 1991 and '93. BU varsity eights won back-to-back national championships in '91 and '92, while Considine took home Coach of the Year awards in the Eastern Association of Women's Rowing Colleges each year.
