California Crosses Bay to Race Stanford at Redwood Shores
THIS WEEK: Sat., May 3: Stanford (Redwood Shores)-- 9-11 a.m.
NEXT REGATTA: Sun., May 18: Pac-10 Championships (Lake Natoma, Sacramento)-- All-Day
The California Golden Bears cross the San Francisco Bay to race
the Stanford Cardinal on the Lagoon at Redwood Shores, Saturday, May
3. Racing is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
RACING RE-CAP: The Cal men's and women's varsity eights
fell to the Washington Huskies in dual races Saturday, April 26, at
the Montlake Cut in Seattle. In the men's varsity race, the Huskies
posted the fastest time of the day with a 5:30.00 as the Bears
crossed the finish line two seconds behind. Cal however, emerged for
the race encouraged knowing that it had cut into the margin of
victory that UW had over the second place Bears at the San Diego
Crew Classic three weeks before.
The men's JV eight also showed that they had gained ground on
the rival Huskies, cutting the San Diego margin of six seconds to
1.6 seconds in the dual. Unable to find its rhythm, the men's frosh
did not fare as well as the varsity and JV.
The only win on the day for the Bears came in the varsity coxed
four as Scott Kaslusky, Grant Davis, Tim Moore, Mike Klyszeiko and
coxswain Luis Pinto, defeated two Washington fours to win by 3.5
seconds.
In women's racing, the varsity eight had their best showing in
years against Washington, just eight seconds off a Husky crew which
is an early favorite to win the national championship. Both the
women's JV and novice crews had strong races, but finished well back
of the Huskies.
The Cal women's varsity eight defeated the Washington State
Cougars by two seconds in dual racing on the Montlake Cut on early
Sunday, April 27. The Bears, coming off a loss to the Washington
Huskies on Saturday, recorded a time three seconds better than the
previous day's, crossing the line in a time of 6:20 .4.
The varsity race got off to a clean start and the Bears took the
lead in the early going. After Cal moved out to a one boat-length
lead, the Cougars began to close as the two crews entered the final
500 meters of the race. The Bears, however, were too much for their
counterparts and sprinted to the finish line, crossing one-half
length ahead of Washington State. The win should move the Bears up
to the No. 4 slot in the NCAA regional rankings behind Washington,
Stanford and Oregon State.
In the JV race, the Cougars proved to be the better crew
finishing 6.5 seconds up on the Bears.
Cal's novice eight recorded the largest margin of victory of
the day defeating WSU by 8.5 seconds The novice were in control from
start to finish and will remain the No. 2-ranked crew in the West.
STANFORD DUAL HISTORY: The men's varisty racing series
for the Schwabacher Cup dates back to 1902. The Bears lead the
series with the Cardinal, 46-18. Cal has won the last six meetings
with Stanford's only two wins since 1972 coming in 1988 and 1990.
The women's varsity racing series dates back to 1976. Since then
Cal's record is 12-9, with the Bears last victory coming in 1994.
ABOUT STANFORD: The Stanford men are coached by Wieslaw
Kudja, who took over the program in 1990. The women are led by Aimee
Baker, now in her second year as head coach. Most recently, Stanford
hosted Sacramento State, April 26, taking both the men's and women's
varsity races.
CAL COACHES: Regarded as one of the nation's premier
coaches, Steve Gladstone returns to Cal this season for his second
stint as men's head coach while serving as the Director of Cal Crew.
During his previous tenure from 1972-80, Gladstone guided the Bears
to three undefeated dual race seasons, a Pac-10 championship and an
Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) championship. Between
1981-94, Gladstone served as the Director of Rowing Operations at
Brown where his crews amassed four Eastern Sprints Championships,
five IRA championships, and two National Collegiate Rowing
Championship titles. Head coach Anna Considine is in her fourth year
of guiding women's crew at Cal. She arrived at Cal after spending
eight years at Boston University serving as head coach between 1991
and '93. BU varsity eights won back-to-back national championships
in '91 and '92, while Considine took home Coach of the Year awards
in the Eastern Association of Women's Rowing Colleges each year.
