BERKELEY, Calif. - The California Golden Bears travel to Seattle to face the Washington Huskies on the Montlake Cut, Saturday, April 26 at 9:00 a.m. On Sunday, April 27, the women's crew returns to action taking on the Washington State Cougars, with the first race scheduled at 7:30 a.m.
ABOUT THE BEARS: The Cal men's crew has gotten off to a strong start in the 1997 racing season. At the San Diego Crew Classic, April 5-6, the varsity and frosh crews finished second, while the JV had a strong race in windswept lane 4 before finishing fourth. The Bears only other competition thus far this year came at the California Collegiate Rowing Championships in Sacramento, April 19. The Cal men dominated the competition including a strong victory by the JV over a Orange Coast Crew that finished ahead of it in San Diego.
The Cal women's varsity and JV did not fare as well as they would have liked at San Diego, finishing ninth and 11th respectively. The women's novice, however, had a strong race finishing third behind Virginia and Washington. At Sacramento, the Cal varsity and novice eights won the only two eights races the Cal women entered. On April 20, the women's varsity and JV crews crossed the bay to race Oregon State at Redwood Shores. Despite loosing both races, the varsity showed that it has picked up considerable boat speed since San Diego, and with one month left before Pac-10's, the Bears may be headed to their best Pac-10 finish in years.
ABOUT THE HUSKIES:
The Washington Huskies have once again fielded strong crews across the program. Evidence of this is UW's performance in San Diego, where the men swept the heavyweight events while the women, won both the varsity and JV races while finishing second in the novice competition. The UW men are led by coach Bob Ernst now in his ninth year, while the women's program is headed by Jan Harville in her 10th year.
WASHINGTON DUAL HISTORY:
The men's varisty racing series for the Schoch Cup dates back to 1903 and is the second longest rivalry in intercollegiate athletic history. The Huskies lead the series with the Bears, 61-24-1, with Cal's last victory coming in 1992. The last time the Bears won at the Montlake Cut was in 1987. The women's varsity racing series dates back to 1975. Since then Cal's record is 7-15, with the Bears last victory coming in 1990 at the Oakland Estuary. The women have not won a the Cut since 1979.
