WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - California junior guard Justin Cobbs was named the Pac-12 Men's Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. Cobbs led Cal to the DIRECTV Classic championship with victories over Drake, Georgia Tech and Pacific in the tournament in Anaheim this past week. The junior was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player after scoring 58 points in the Bears' three victories. He paced Cal in scoring in two of the three games and scored at least 17 points in each contest. The guard was 25-of-29 (.862) from the free-throw line and posted 17 rebounds, 13 assists and six steals in the tournament. Cobbs scored four of his 21 points in the final 71 seconds, including crucial free throws in the final minute, to lead Cal to the tournament-opening 73-70 win over Drake on Thursday. He followed that up with 17 points in the 68-57 win over Georgia Tech in the semifinals on Friday and 20 points in the 78-58 title game victory over Pacific on Sunday. It marks Cobbs' second career conference player of the week honor. It is the 46th all-time selection for the Bears and the first by a Cal student-athlete since he was also honored on Feb. 20, 2012. Cobbs has been one of Cal's top-two scorers in each of the Bears' six games this season. The junior ranks third in the Pac-12 in scoring per game (20.0), fourth in field goal percentage (.635), fifth in free throw percentage (.878), sixth in assists per game (3.7) and is tied for 10th in steals per contest (1.5) through Sunday's games. Cobbs and the Bears, who are 6-0 and off to their best start since the 2007-08 season, will travel to Madison, Wisc. this weekend for a matchup with Wisconsin on Sunday at 1 p.m. (PT). The Badgers are receiving votes in both the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today Coaches national poll. The Big Ten Network will provide live television coverage of Sunday's game, while the Cal IMG Sports Network will broadcast the game over the radio. You can tune into the radio broadcast in the Bay Area on KKSF 910 AM in the Bay Area and KTKZ 1380 AM in Sacramento or online at CalBears.com/AllAccess.
