BERKELEY - Former Cal All-American Leon Powe scored 21 points just 14 minutes of playing time to help the Boston Celtics to a game two victory over the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals June 8. His breakout performance opened a lot of eyes around the NBA and received coverage from coast to coast.
Although Powe played just two seasons with the Bears before declaring for the NBA draft, he left a lasting impact on the program. One year after missing a season due to knee surgery, he was named to the All-Pac-10 team for the second time in 2006 when he was also chosen a second-team All-American. Powe led the Pac-10 in both scoring (20.5 ppg) and rebounding (10.1 rpg), becoming just the sixth player to top the conference in both categories. He was also one of three players in NCAA Division I to average at least 20 points and 10 rebounds in 2005-06.
As a freshman in 2003-04, Powe earned Pac-10 Freshman of the Year and All-Pac-10 honors, becoming the first freshman in the history of the league to pace the Pac-10 in rebounding. He also topped the conference in double-doubles with 14 and set a Cal freshman record by pulling down 9.5 rpg.
