BERKELEY - Four members of Cal's incoming class of men's basketball recruits - Gary Franklin, Richard Solomon, Allen Crabbe and Alex Rossi - have been invited to play in the second annual High School Academic All-America Classic on Saturday at the Felix Events Center on the campus of Azusa Pacific University. Gary Franklin, Richard Solomon and Allen Crabbe will be members of the American All-Stars coached by Michael Lynch of Price High School, while Alex Rossi will be on the National All-Stars coached by De La Salle's Frank Alloco. With the four players, Cal has more recruits in the game than any other university in the country. The game will feature the finest basketball players in the country who have excelled in the classroom and have contributed to their communities. Student-athletes are selected based on the following criteria: grade point average, SAT/ACT scores, strength of high school curriculum, college selection, community service involvement, extracurricular activities and basketball ability. This year's participants have an average grade point average of 3.6. In addition to the basketball game, the event will feature a formal banquet, a Los Angeles tour, a free camp for Special Olympics, Slam Dunk 3-Point Competition and a parent workshop. Franklin, who played at Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, Calif., is rated the No. 11 point guard and No. 65 overall recruit nationally by ESPN.com. Crabbe and Solomon were teammates at Los Angeles Price HS, with Crabbe ranked 57th overall and Solomon the No. 48 power forward. Crabbe was also named the Cal-Hi Sports California Player of the Year, the Gatorade State Player of the Year and a Parade All-American. Rossi, from New Trier HS in Winnetka, Ill., comes in as the country's No. 35 shooting guard by ESPN.com. Cal's recruiting class was ranked No. 23 in the country by ESPN.com in November, which came before the Bears added guard Emerson Murray of Vancouver, British Columbia, to the roster Thursday.
The Academic All-America Classic, which will start at 7:30 p.m., is scheduled to be streamed live on FoxSports.com. For more information, click here to view the game's official website.
