BERKELEY -Cal improved to 12-5 all-time in seven NIT appearances. The Bears have won their opening-round game six times. Cal also improved to 8-1 in NIT home games.
Jorge Gutierrez finished with 25 points, the seventh time this season he scored at least 20 in a game. He had 17 points in the first half and was 9-for-9 from the free throw line. Gutierrez also added five rebounds and six assists, plus 4 steals to move up to seventh on Cal's all-time season steals list with 54 this year.
Allen Crabbe finished with 20 points. He was 4-of-10 from three-point range to give him 59 on the season, one shy of Ryan Drew's Cal freshman mark (60 in 1988). It marked the sixth time Crabbe has scored at least 20 in a game this year and fourth in a row. Over the past four games, he has averaged 22.8 ppg
In forging a 20-10 lead six minutes into the game, Cal made 7-of-8 shots from the floor, including 2-of-3 from three-point range. Gutierrez led the early charge with 7 points.
Emerson Murray scored a career-high 5 points. His three-pointer midway through the first half was his first since making one at Washington State on Feb. 10.
Richard Solomon tied his career high with 10 rebounds. He also had 10 vs. Hartford on Dec. 28, 2010. Solomon played a season-high 28 minutes in his first career start (for Sanders-Frison).
Ole Miss outscored Cal, 17-9, in second-chance opportunities, while Cal held an 18-11 advantage in points off turnovers.
