TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - California's late rally fell just short as the Golden Bears dropped a 66-62 decision at Arizona State on Thursday night at Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe, Ariz.
It was Cal's (13-9, 5-5 Pac-12) first loss in six meetings with the Sun Devils and first defeat in Tempe since 2009.
Evan Gordon scored 23 points, Ruslan Pateev had 12 points and eight rebounds to lead Arizona State (18-5. 7-3 Pac-12).
ASU went up 16 points after a 17-3 run in the first half and kept the lead around double digits until the Bears tightened up defensively in the closing minutes.
Justin Cobbs hit a 3-pointer to cut Arizona State's lead to three and followed Gordon's two free throws with another to pull the Bears within 64-62 with 22 seconds left.
Gordon hit 1 of 2 from the line at the other end to give Cal a chance, but the Sun Devils forced Allen Crabbe into a turnover with 9 seconds left. Jonathan Gilling sealed it by hitting 1 of 2 free throws after that.
Junior guard Allen Crabbe, who moved up to 15th on Cal's all-time scoring list with 1,454 career points, and freshman guard Tyrone Wallace paced the Bears with 16 points apiece against the Sun Devils. Wallace scored 13 of his 16 points in the second half.
Cobbs finished 2-of-3 from beyond the arc, pouring in 13 points on the evening.
Cal will travel to Tucson for a Sunday afternoon match-up with No. 7 Arizona. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. (PT)
