Jay John Position: Assistant AD for Basketball Development Experience: 5th Year Alma Mater: Arizona 1981

Jay John, who enters his fifth season with the California men's basketball program, was elevated to Assistant Athletic Director for Basketball Development prior to the 2012-13 season.

John served as a coach for the past 29 years, including the last four with the Golden Bears. In his new role, John now oversees the basketball program's operations. He will also help enhance Cal's presence with alumni, promote Cal basketball's rich tradition and work with the administration on enhancing the program's development efforts.

"I am very excited for a promotion to this new role as Assistant Director of Athletics for Basketball Development," John said. "My 29 years as a college basketball coach has provided me with a significant background to launch this transition into administration. There is great enthusiasm within this athletic department under Sandy Barbour's direction and this new role provides me with an enhanced opportunity to make an impact from a department-wide level as the Cal brand continues to grow."

The Bears posted an 88-47 record and captured the 2010 Pac-10 Championship with John as an assistant coach on Montgomery's staff the past four seasons.

"Jay has been an extraordinary asset to our staff as an exceptional coach and recruiter these past four years and he will continue to have a monumental impact on this program," Montgomery said. "We share the same enthusiasm for Cal and I am excited that he will help lead us in developing a winning program inside and outside of the gym."

During John's nearly three decades on the sidelines, he served as the head coach at Oregon State and worked as an assistant at Arizona, Oregon, Butler and San Francisco, in addition to Cal, at the Division I level. He has helped guide each program to the postseason during his tenure as a coach.

"My career as a basketball coach is something that I am very proud of and it has been an honor to work with some of the great coaches in the game" John said. "I enter this role with the same passion as I did as a mentor on the sideline. While I will surely miss the time I spent with the many great student-athletes I have had an opportunity to coach during my career, this newly-created position has been a goal of mine for some time and I am happy to see it come to fruition. It allows me to further cultivate the basketball community and help enhance the great tradition here at Cal."

At Oregon State from 2002-08, he directed the Beavers to the 2005 National Invitation Tournament, compiling a 17-15 mark, for the program's first postseason berth and winning record in 15 years. He won 66 games during his first five seasons in Corvallis, the most for an OSU coach in a five-year stretch since 1988-93.

John spent four years under Lute Olson at Arizona where he was part of the Wildcats' appearance in the 2001 national championship game. He also coached at Oregon for two stints (1984-85 and `97-98), with additional stops at San Francisco in 1988-89, Butler from 1989-97, Jamestown Community College in New York and entered the coaching ranks at his alma mater, Salpointe Cathlolic High School in Tucson, Ariz.

A 1981 graduate of Arizona with a degree in biology, John earned a master's degree from Butler in 1994. He and his wife, Lisa, have two sons, Tyler and Trevor.
