BERKELEY, CALIF. - University of California junior left-hander Michael Bugary was selected in the 15th round by the Boston Red Sox and senior third baseman/shortstop Michael Brady was selected in the 24th round by the Florida Marlins during the second day of the 2009 Major League Amateur Draft. Bugary and Brady join three other Golden Bears - junior center fielder Brett Jackson, who was selected in the first round by the Chicago Cubs; junior second baseman Jeff Kobernus, who was a second round pick of the Washington Nationals and junior right-hander/designated hitter/outfielder Blake Smith, who was a second round pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers - as Cal's 2009 MLB draftees. Bugary came into his own during the 2009 season after battling injuries in 2007 and 2008, finishing 3-4 with a 4.74 ERA and a save in a team-high 28 appearances (6th in Pac-10). He also had a team-high 69 strikeouts in 49.1 innings of relief (one start). Bugary picked up wins in relief over Long Beach State and twice against Stanford during the 2009 campaign. Brady became Cal's starting shortstop as a sophomore and saw action at both third base and shortstop as a senior, batting .260 (45-for-173, .253 vs. Pac-10) with 13 doubles, two triples, four home runs and 24 RBI. He hit a double in his last collegiate at-bat May 24 versus USC. Brady finished his career having played in 163 games with 21 doubles, five triples, 13 home runs and 79 RBI. He was outstanding towards the end of the 2007 Pac-10 season, producing a two-home run, five-RBI game versus Arizona State, and a two HR and game-winning home run versus USC.
