April 23, 2007 BERKELEY - For the first time this year, the Muscle Milk California Athlete of the Week honor goes to a baseball player as sophomore right-hander Tyson Ross finally breaks through after another outstanding performance on the mound for the Golden Bears. Ross, who is defining the term "hard-luck pitcher" has been amazing all season, registering a 1.98 ERA with 88 strikeouts in 86.1 innings while holding opponents to a .216 batting average. However, despite his dominance, he has posted just a 4-5 record this year. This past weekend, he just needed one run of support to crack the win column. Pitching on Friday afternoon against arch-rival Stanford, Ross mowed down the Cardinal, tossing 7.2 innings of five-hit, shutout ball while striking out six. It was the 12sth straight appearance that saw the Oakland product complete at least six innings this year (every start of the year). Cal fans have another opportunity to see Ross this weekend as the big right-hamder is scheduled to start Friday afternoon's game against Pac-10 rival Arizona State. Game time is 2:30 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
