BEAR NOTES
Fresh off of winning two-of-three games at No. 18 Texas, California (16-10, 1-5 in Pac-12) returns to Pac-12 play with a three-game series April 5-7 at USC's (17-9, 3-5) Dedeaux Field. Cal's games against the Trojans are the tail end of a grueling 11-game road trip (Golden Bears currently 5-3) that ends April 9 when David Esquer's squad hosts Stanford. Last weekend, the Bears won two of three games (L 13-3, W 12-2, W 6-5) versus the Longhorns in Round Rock, Texas. Against Texas, who along with Cal was in the 2011 College World Series, junior third baseman Mitch Delfino had a big day in the series final with a home run and the game-winning RBI. Delfino, who received mention in College Baseball 360 Primetime Performers, has now hit safely in 14 of the last 16 games, and had a streak of reaching base in 17-straight games. He is batting .341 with seven doubles, four home runs and 17 RBI. Junior right-hander Logan Scott earned his Pac-12 leading sixth save pitching the ninth inning. Besides his six saves, Scott is 3-0 with a 2.45 ERA and seventh in the Pac-12 with 13 appearances. Junior outfielder Darrel Matthew is hitting .345 with three doubles, a triple and 14 RBI after a 4-for-4 day March 31 at Texas. Despite being only 1-5 in conference play, the Bears still have a .292 team batting average and a 3.83 team ERA. Cal, who qualified for the CWS last season for the first time since 1992, continues to be led by junior second baseman Tony Renda, a first-team preseason All-America selection by Baseball America and the 2011 Pac-10 Player of the Year. Renda is hitting .351 with six doubles, two home runs and eight RBI. He also leads the Bears with eight stolen bases, including stealing third base three times, and his 40 hits are fifth-best in the Pac-12. Cal also features senior catcher Chadd Krist, a two-time All-Pac-10 selection drafted in the 13th round by the Chicago White Sox in 2011. Krist is hitting .315 with nine doubles, two home runs and a team-high 22 RBI. Krist led the Pac-10 with 27 doubles last season and currently has 55 career doubles, tied for second on the Cal all-time career doubles list. Senior outfielder Chad Bunting leads the Bears with five home runs (5th in Pac-12) and 22 RBI. Sophomore first baseman Andrew Knapp is second in the Pac-12 with 10 doubles. Senior right-handed reliever Joey Donofrio is 3-0 with a 2.00 ERA, and has 18 strikeouts and four walks in 18.0 innings. Senior right-hander Matt Flemer, the Bears' closer last season, is 4-2 with a 2.68 ERA and is fifth in the conference with 50.1 innings pitched and has a .219 opponent batting average.

HEAD COACH David Esquer
Esquer, 46, is in his 13th season with a career record of 370-323-2 (.534). After his team was scheduled to be discontinued following the 2011 season, Esquer led the Bears to the program's first appearance at the College World Series since 1992, and on the eve of Cal's 7-3 CWS victory over Texas A&M June 21, 2011, was named the National Coach of the Year by the National College Baseball Writers Association. Esquer's award, which was voted on by the NCBWA Board of Directors, was selected from a list that included all Division I Conference Coaches of the Year and the coaches of the 16 NCAA Super Regional teams. The Bears' program was reinstated through fund-raising efforts and made its sixth all-time appearance in the CWS. Esquer led Cal out of the loser's bracket in the Houston Regional and defeated Dallas Baptist in the Super Regional to advance to Omaha. Cal entered the 2011 NCAA Tournament with an at-large bid out of the Pac-10. After a 6-4 loss to Baylor in the opening game, Esquer's team got past Alcorn State, 10-6, and No. 13 Rice, 6-3, to face Baylor for the regional championship. Cal forced the if-necessary game with an 8-0 shutout behind the strong pitching performance of freshman left-hander Kyle Porter (three hits, no runs, no walks and a career-high nine strikeouts). First baseman Devon Rodriguez earned Most Outstanding Player of the Houston Regional honors with a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the ninth to lead Cal's dramatic come-from-behind 9-8 victory over Baylor to advance to the Super Regional against Dallas Baptist. The Bears, led by Pac-10 Player of the Year Tony Renda, swept Dallas Baptist, 7-0 and 6-2, in Santa Clara to advance to the CWS. It was the fourth appearance by Cal in the NCAA Tournament in Esquer's tenure, including three NCAA regionals in the last four years (the first time in school history). He was the 2001 Pac-10 Coach of the Year after the Bears went 34-25 and played in the Baton Rouge Regional (1-2). In 2008, Cal was 33-21-2 and competed in the Long Beach Regional, and in 2010 the Bears were 29-25 and played in the Norman, Okla. Regional (0-2). Fifty seven Bears have signed pro contracts under Esquer, including first round picks Brett Jackson (CF, Chicago Cubs, 31st overall) in 2009, David Cooper (1B, Toronto, 17th overall) in 2008, Brandon Morrow (RHP, Seattle, fifth overall) in 2006 and Conor Jackson (INF., Arizona, 19th overall) in 2003. Esquer came to Cal after serving as top assistant at Pepperdine (1996-99), and No. 2 assistant at Stanford (1991-96). A shortstop at Stanford (1984-87), he started on the 1987 College World Series championship team, earning All-Tournament honors. Esquer played professionally for four seasons with Baltimore, California and Milwaukee.

The USC Trojans, coached by Frank Cruz (Second year at USC, 42-40, .512), are 17-9, last defeating Pepperdine, 5-4, Tuesday at home after splitting two games (W 15-10, L 9-7) last weekend at Washington State. Top hitters for the Trojans are senior first baseman Matt Foat (.409, 2 HR, 16 RBI), junior third baseman Adam Landecker (.337, 0 HR, 10 RBI) and senior catcher Kevin Roundtree (.333, 0 HR, 20 RBI). USC's tentative rotation for the Cal series is freshman left-hander Stephen Tarpley (4-0, 3.25 ERA), senior right-hander Andrew Triggs (2-3, 3.38 ERA) and senior right-hander Ben Mount (1-3, 4.95 ERA. Last season the Trojans were 25-31 overall and 13-14 (seventh) in the Pac-10. USC's Associate Head Coach, Dan Hubbs, was Cal's pitching coach from 2000-2011 before returning to his alma mater where he played from 1991-93.

RENDA AND JONES SELECTED PRESEASON ALL-AMERICANS
California junior second baseman Tony Renda and junior left-hander Justin Jones have been selected 2012 Preseason All-Americans. Renda was tabbed as a first-team preseason All-American by Baseball America, and second-team All-American by NCBWA, Collegiate Baseball and Perfect Game. Jones was a third-team pick of the NCBWA. Renda was named 2011 Pac-10 Player of the Year, only the fourth player in Cal history to earn the honor, and was a member of the Houston Regional All-Tournament Team. He finished last season batting .332 and a team-best .348 versus Pac-10 competition, with 14 doubles, two triples, three home runs and a team-leading 44 RBI. Renda also led the Pac-10 with 88 hits and was third in the conference with 115 total bases. Jones was a 2011 honorable mention All-Pac-10 selection after earning Freshman All-America honors in 2010 along with Renda. In 2011, Jones was 9-6 with a 2.93 ERA, and had 81 strikeouts in a team-high 119.2 innings with three complete games. He earned one of the biggest wins in school history in a June 11 start versus Dallas Baptist at the Santa Clara Super Regional, throwing 6.0 innings with one hit, no runs, one walk and three strikeouts in a 7-0 shutout. Jones left prior to the seventh inning due to cramping in his left bicep, but still earned the win as the Bears won their first-ever Super Regional contest.
CAL NOTED BY BASEBALL AMERICA
Besides Tony Renda being selected a first-team preseason All-American by Baseball America, the Bears were mentioned several times in the magazine's Regional Report. Baseball America predicts Cal to make the postseason for the fourth time in the past five years. They list Renda as the league's Best Pure Hitter and Best Defensive Second Baseball. Baseball America also lists senior catcher Chadd Krist as the Pac-12's Best Defensive Catcher. Renda is picked as the league's seventh-best pro prospect and junior left-hander Justin Jones as the 10th-best prospect. For the 2013 draft, Baseball America has sophomore catcher/designated hitter/outfielder Andrew Knapp as the conference's eighth-best pro prospect. In CollegeBaseballInsider.com, they list Jones as the Pac-12's fourth-best starter, Krist as the best defensive catcher with the best arm and Renda as the best pure hitter and the hitter you would least like to face.
RENDA NAMED PAC-10'S TOP PLAYER
As a sophomore Cal second baseman Tony Renda was selected as the 2011 Pac-10 Player of the Year. Renda, who has helped the Bears to a regional berth in each of his first two years with the program, batted .332 and was in the Top 10 in the Pac-10 in three different offensive categories. He became only the fourth Bear in school history to garner Pac-10 Player of the Year honors, joining Jon Zuber and Troy Penix, who were the Co-Pac-10 Southern Division Players of the Year in 1992, and Rod Booker, who was Co-Pac-10 Southern Division Player of the Year in 1980. Besides hitting .332, which was ninth in the league, Renda was first in the conference with 88 hits and third with 115 total bases. He was also named first-team All-Pac-10 for the second year in a row. After earning all-conference honors last season as a freshman, Renda went on to bat .373 and was named to the NCAA Norman (Okla.) Regional All-Tournament team and was a Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American. Besides Renda's Player of the Year honor, the Bears had five other players honored by the Pac-10. Junior right-hander Erik Johnson and junior catcher Chadd Krist were selected first-team All-Pac-10, while junior right-hander Matt Flemer, sophomore outfielder Vince Bruno and sophomore left-hander Justin Jones were tabbed Pac-10 honorable mention. Bruno, a transfer from Los Medanos College, batted .299 in his first year with the Bears.
PORTER'S PERFORMANCES
In what would have to be considered one of the best freshman pitching performances in Cal baseball history, left-hander Kyle Porter was 6-0 with a 1.89 ERA and two saves (four starts and 25 appearances). Porter also had 57 strikeouts and only 15 walks in 57.0 innings and was named a Freshman All-American by Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball, Perfect Game and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers. He had one of the biggest wins in school history when on June 21, 2011 he pitched 6.0 innings (seven hits, three runs, one walk, four strikeouts) versus Texas A&M to help give the Bears their first victory (7-3) in the College World Series since 1980. Porter was a member of the 2011 Houston Regional All-Tournament Team as well after throwing a career-high 6.2 innings with three hits, no runs, two walks and a career-high nine strikeouts June 5 versus Baylor in the Houston Regional.
RODRIGUEZ'S FAMOUS HIT
Junior Devon Rodriguez will forever be known in Cal baseball lore for his clutch game-winning hit versus Baylor as he helped bring back the Bears from a 7-1 deficit by going 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI, including the game-winning RBI single with two outs and two strikes in Cal's 9-8 victory to clinch the 2011 Houston Regional. Rodriguez was named the Houston Regional Most Outstanding Player after going 8-18 (.444) with a six RBI during the Bears' five regional contests. His fame also coincides with KALX announcer Danny Friesinger's enthusiastic call of the winning hit that sent Cal to the Santa Clara Super Regional (Rodriguez's game-winning hit and postgame interview).
BUNTING'S BLASTS
Senior center fielder Chad Bunting had an impressive 2011 campaign leading the team with seven home runs (5th in the Pac-10), despite being out March 13-May 7 with a sprained right thumb. Bunting was a member of the 2011 Houston Regional All-Tournament Team after going 6-for-18 with a double, two home runs and a team-high seven RBI, including 3-for-3 with a solo home run and a three-run homer June 5 versus Baylor. Bunting started the year on a 11-game hitting streak and was named March 1 Pac-10 Player of the Week after an outstanding performance at the Caravelle Resorts Tournament in Myrtle Beach, S.C where he was 3-for-5 with two, three-run homers and a career-high seven RBI Feb. 25 versus Coastal Carolina and 7-for-12 (.583) with four runs, a double and two home runs for the tournament. He went 11-for-37 (.297) in the postseason with two doubles, three home runs and a team-high 13 RBI. Bunting hit a three-run homer in game one of Santa Clara Super Regional and had a hit in each of the Bears' three College World Series games.
FLEMER'S FINESSE
Senior right-hander Matt Flemer was outstanding in 2011 as the Bears' closer and is slated to be one of Cal's starters in 2012. Flemer was 4-2 with a 1.83 ERA and six saves (8th in Pac-10) in 30 relief appearances (6th in Pac-10) last season. He also had 41 strikeouts with only eight walks in 39.1 innings, earning 2011 honorable mention All-Pac-10 honors. Flemer was drafted in the 19th round by the Kansas City Royals, but decided to return for his senior campaign. For the 2011 postseason, he was 2-0 with a save, making eight appearances with eight strikeouts in 9.1 innings. Flemer earned the save versus Texas A&M June 21 in the College World Series, throwing 3.0 innings with three hits, no runs, no walks and five strikeouts, and threw the final inning in Cal's 6-2 win over Dallas Baptist in the June 12 clinching game of Santa Clara Super Regional. He made four appearances at the Houston Regional as well, picking up wins in relief June 5 versus Rice and June 6 versus Baylor (2-0, 3.2 innings, two hits, no runs, two walks, three strikeouts. KRIST'S CONTRIBUTIONS
A key to the Bears' success has been senior catcher Chadd Krist, who nearly broke Cal's single-season doubles record in 2011. Last year, Krist batted .297 with 27 doubles - which was first in the Pac-10 and second on Cal's single-season doubles list - with a triple, two home runs and 43 RBI. He was also ninth in the Pac-10 with 29 walks and 105 total bases, had 23 multiple hit games and a team-leading 12 multiple RBI games. Krist went 12-for-41 (.293) in the postseason with five doubles, a triple, a home run and eight RBI. He was a member of the 2011 Houston Regional All-Tournament Team, first-team All-Pac-10, and was drafted in the 13th round by the Chicago White Sox, but decided to return for his senior campaign. His 55 career doubles is now tied for second on the all-time Cal career doubles list.
NEU ADDITION
Mike Neu, former standout at Miami and a Major Leaguer with the Oakland A's, was hired as Cal's pitching coach in August of 2011, replacing Dan Hubbs. Hubbs, after 12 years working with the Bear hurlers, returned to his alma mater, USC, to become Associate Head Coach for the Trojans. Neu, 33, was the head coach at Diablo Valley College from 2009-11, leading his team to an 87-41 mark (.680) with two Big 8 Conference titles. His pro baseball career included playing in the Los Angeles Dodgers, Florida Marlins, Oakland Athletics and Cincinnati Reds organizations. Neu was called up to the Major Leagues with the A's on April 9, 2003 and posted a 3.64 ERA in 32.0 relief appearances (42.0 innings) that season. At Miami he had a stellar 1999 campaign and helped the Hurricanes capture the College World Series title with a 6-5 victory over Florida State in the championship game. Neu finished the year 3-1 with a 2.94 ERA and tallied 110 strikeouts in 67.0 innings, earning Collegiate Baseball All-America honors. He led the nation in strikeouts per nine innings (14.8) and was selected to the All-CWS team with three saves and appearances in all four of Miami's games. Neu joins David Esquer (starting shortstop on Stanford's 1987 NCAA champions) as members of the Cal coaching staff who have won national titles.
CAL IN THE WORLD SERIES
With the 7-3 victory over Texas A&M on June 21, 2011, the Bears won their first College World Series game since defeating Miami, 4-3, on June 12, 1980. When Cal played Virginia in front of a crowd of 25,833 on June 23 at TD Ameritrade Park, it was the largest crowd to ever watch the Golden Bears play baseball. Cal won the inaugural College World Series title in 1947 under head coach Clint Evans, defeating former President George Bush's Yale team, 8-7, in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Evans was instrumental in establishing the CWS. The Bears won the national title again in 1957 under head coach George Wolfman with a 1-0 victory over Penn State. Cal also placed third in the 1980 World Series under head coach Bob Milano, and was seventh in the CWS in 1988 and 1992 under Milano. 2011 senior left fielder Austin Booker's father, Rod, was the starting shortstop on the Bears' 1980 squad, while Major League star Jeff Kent was a member of Cal's 1988 College World Series team. Similar to the 2011 season in which they faced the tournament's No. 1 seed (Virginia), the Bears played the top seed in 1992, Miami, losing to the Hurricanes, 4-3, in 13 innings.
BEAR POSTSEASON NOTES
Cal is now 43-25 (.632) in NCAA postseason games all-time, including 7-3 in 2011 (1-2 in the CWS, 2-0 in first-ever NCAA Super Regional and 4-1 in the NCAA Houston Regional). Head coach David Esquer has eight postseason wins, passing George Wolfman for second on the school's all-time list behind Bob Milano's 20 postseason wins. The last time the Bears won six postseason games in a row was 1957, and the seven postseason wins is the most for a Cal squad since the 1980 team had eight. Cal's 38 victories in 2011 were the most wins since the Bears' 1988 CWS squad won 40 games. Junior right fielder Chad Bunting had five extra-base hits in the postseason (two doubles and three home runs) for a .618 slugging percentage. Besides Bunting's three home runs, three other players hit roundtrippers in the postseason - junior shortstop Marcus Semien, junior catcher Chadd Krist and sophomore first baseman Devon Rodriguez. The Bears amassed double-digit hits in six of their 10 postseason games, while Tony Renda got at least one hit in 14 of his last 16 games of the 2011 season.
QUICK HIGHLIGHT NOTES ON 2011 CAL BASEBALL
Besides winning the Santa Clara Super Regional and the come-from-behind victory over Baylor in the title game of the Houston Regional (Cal had trailed 7-1 at one point and scored six runs in the last two innings), additional highlights for Cal in 2011 included a ninth inning comeback to sweep Utah in a season-opening doubleheader Feb. 20, a dominating performance at the Caravelle Tournament in South Carolina Feb. 25-27, an undefeated (3-0) record at the Cal Baseball Classic at AT&T Park March 11-13, Pac-10 sweeps over Washington State and Washington, a 6-2 victory at then No. 3-ranked Oregon State May 7 and a 4-0 shutout at Pac-10 champion UCLA May 20. Cal had six walk-off wins during the 2011 season (Feb. 20 vs. Utah, March 20 vs. Rice, March 27 vs. WSU, April 29 and May 1 vs. Oregon, June 6 vs. Baylor).
CRAIG SHINES IN MLB WORLD SERIES
The same year Cal made it to the College World Series, a former Golden Bear made it to the MLB World Series and is a World Champion. Allen Craig was instrumental in St. Louis' series clinching 6-2 win over Texas Oct. 28. Craig hit his third home run of the series, robbed Nelson Cruz of a home run over the left field fence and had the honor of catching the final out of the game to give St. Louis its 11th World Series title. Craig concluded the Fall Classic 5-for-19 with three home runs and five RBI. He was a hero in the Cardinals' 3-2 victory over the Rangers Oct. 19 in Game One. Craig, a shortstop/outfielder at Cal from 2003-06, had a pinch-hit RBI single down the right field line off of reliever Alexi Ogando in the sixth inning to give the Cardinals their one-run advantage. His single was the first go-ahead pinch-hit RBI in the World Series since Wade Boggs' in 1996 for the New York Yankees. Craig was one of 10 former Bears who have played in the Major Leagues this past summer, nine of whom played under Cal coach David Esquer.
CAL FACTS
Cal won the inaugural College World Series title in 1947, defeating former President George H.W. Bush's Yale team, 8-7, in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The Bears' program began in 1892 and is now in its 120th season. George Bush, Sr., sent a letter of congratulations to David Esquer following last year's College World Series appearance.
The Golden Bears have had two players become league MVPs in professional baseball - Jackie Jensen was the American League MVP in 1958 and Jeff Kent was the National League MVP in 2001.
Cal is one of only 20 schools that have won NCAA Baseball titles and only one of 14 schools that have won more than one national championship (1947, 1957). The Bears have competed in six College World Series (1947, 1957, 1980, 1988, 1992, 2011).
Geoff Blum, Cal's starting shortstop as a freshman on the Bears' 1992 College World Series team, had a game-winning homer for the Chicago White Sox in the 2005 Major League World Series.
Cal has had three coaches selected to the ABCA Hall of Fame - Clint Evans (1930-54), who led the Bears to the first College World Series title in 1947; George Wolfman (1955-73), who led Cal to the 1957 CWS title; and Bob Milano (1978-99), who led the Bears to three CWS appearances, including a third-place finish in 1980.
