PULLMAN, WASH. -The No. 19-ranked Cal baseball team could not overcome giving up five runs in the first inning, losing, 9-4, Monday (May 10) at Washington State in game three of the three-game Pac-10 series at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman. The Golden Bears, who last weekend (April 29-May 2) had swept Oregon State at Evans Diamond, lost all three games in the Palouse (13-10, 11-9, 9-4) and are now 27-18 overall and 11-10 in league play. WSU improves to 25-17 and 9-9 in conference. Freshman designated hitter Tony Renda was 3-for-5 with an RBI triple in the third inning, and sophomore catcher Chadd Krist had a two-run single in the seventh inning.
The losing pitcher for the Bears was sophomore right-hander Dixon Anderson (4-2), who threw 3.1 innings with 11 hits, eight runs, one walk and two strikeouts. The Cougars tallied five runs on six hits off Anderson in the bottom of the first inning, including Patrick Claussen's three-run homer.
Senior left-hander Chris Petrini replaced Anderson with one out in the fourth inning and ended up throwing 4.1 innings with four hits and one run (on Erik Johnson's wild pitch with two outs in the eighth inning).
Cal came back with two runs in the third inning when Renda's RBI triple to right field scored sophomore left fielder Danny Oh. Renda later scored on WSU third baseman Matt Argyropoulos' fielding error on a ball hit by junior second baseman Brian Guinn to make the score, 5-2.
But the Cougars added three runs in the fourth inning to take an 8-2 lead and held the Bears scoreless until Krist's two-run single to right-center field with two outs in the seventh inning.
Besides Renda's three hits and Krist's two-run single; Guinn, Oh, junior right fielder Mark Canha, freshman first baseman Devin Rodriguez and sophomore center fielder Chad Bunting also recorded singles for the Bears.
Cal will now take a week off for finals before facing San Francisco on Tuesday, May 18 at 2:30 p.m. at Evans Diamond. The Bears will then host No. 11 ranked UCLA (34-10, 10-8) in a three-game Pac-10 series May 21-23 at Evans Diamond.
