PULLMAN, WASH. -Bolstered by a complete-game, two-hit shutout effort from Cal junior left-hander Justin Jones, the Golden Bears blanked Washington State, 8-0, Sunday afternoon (May 6) at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman, Wash. Jones threw 9.0 innings allowing only two hits with no runs, one walk and six strikeouts. He was phenomenal in the road win, walking the first batter of the contest and then not walking another hitter, and retiring the last 15 Cougar hitters in a row. Jones, who only gave up lead-off singles in the fourth and fifth innings and did not allow a runner past second base, is now 4-6 on the year and recorded his 23rd career win, tying him with David Cash (1999-01) for fifth on the school's all-time career win list.
Sunday's win also gave the Bears their first Pac-12 road series victory as Cal rebounded from a 10-4 loss on Friday by winning, 9-4, on Saturday and, 8-0, Sunday. The Bears improved to 25-19 overall and 9-12 in conference play. WSU dropped to 23-20 and 9-11 in league.
Cal started off the game well with two runs in the first inning off of Cougar starter J.D. Leckenby (4-5, 6.0 innings, seven hits, four runs, one walk, two strikeouts) when senior left fielder Danny Oh scored on a Leckenby wild pitch and Bruno had a fielder's choice RBI;
The Bears added another run in the third inning when Delfino doubled down the left field line, was sacrificed to third base by a Bruno bunt, and then scored on a Leckenby wild pitch.
Cal put the game out of reach with four runs in the seventh inning. Bruno had a bases loaded RBI single to left field, senior catcher Chadd Krist had a sacrifice fly to center field, senior center fielder Chad Bunting had an RBI bunt and sophomore third baseman Mike Reuvekamp knocked in an RBI double down the left field line.
The Bears pushed across their eighth run on an RBI single up the middle by Bruno.
With his 4-for-5 day, Delfino has raised his average to a team-leading .381 (11 doubles, four home runs, 31 RBI). Junior second baseman Tony Renda is batting .376 and Bruno has raised his average to .331.
Cal next returns to Evans Diamond for a three-game Pac-12 series versus No. 11-ranked Arizona, May 11-13. KNEW 960 AM, part of the IMG Sports Network, and Cal's student radio, KALX 90.7 FM, will be broadcasting all of next weekend's contests with game times at 2:30 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
