BERKELEY, CA - The California baseball team allowed UC Davis to score four runs in both the fourth and sixth innings on the way to the Aggies' 11-7 victory over the Bears Tuesday afternoon at Evans Diamond. Cal dropped to 25-22 overall and UC Davis improved to 29-19.
In a game that was added to Cal's schedule as a make-up for getting snowed out in a late February series at Oklahoma State, the Bears struggled on the mound and left 14 runners on base, outhitting the Aggies, 16-12. The winning pitcher for UC Davis was starter Jeff Vignau, who improved his record to 1-1, throwing 5.3 innings with 12 hits, five runs, one walk and two strikeouts. The losing pitcher for Cal was sophomore starter Kyle Crist (2-3, two hits, four runs, three earned runs, two walks, three strikeouts).
The Bears took an early led in the contest by scoring a run in the first inning on a RBI single by junior catcher Chris Grossman, and a run in the third inning on a RBI single by junior right fielder Brian Horwitz. The Aggies exploded for four runs in the fourth inning, with the key hit being a bases loaded, three-run double by Dustin Soderman.
UC Davis tacked on two more runs in the fifth on a two-run homer by Robby Tuck. The Aggies then scored four more runs in the sixth inning, with Tulk producing another big hit with a two-run double.
Cal threatened in the bottom of the sixth when it scored four runs. Freshman center fielder Jeremy Burchett and Grossman had RBI singles, and Horwitz added a two-run single. UC Davis got out of the inning when reliever Travis Bearden got Jeff Dragicevich to ground into a bases loaded double play to end the inning.
After a balk by Bear reliever Brent Hale in the seventh inning allowed the Aggies' 11th run, the Bears scored another run in the bottom of the ninth of a bases loaded walk by Burchett. Down 11-7 with the bases loaded, UC Davis reliever Joel Needham was able to get Cal's Conor Jackson to fly out to right field to end the game.

Jackson finished the game 3-for-6 with a double, Grossman was 3-for-5 with two RBI and Horwitz was 2-for-5 with three RBI for the Bears. Tulk was 3-for-5 with double, a home run and four RBI, while Soderman was 3-for-5 with three doubles and three RBI for the Aggies
Cal will next travel to No. 20 Arizona for a three-game Pac-10 series, beginning Friday, Mat 2 at 7 p.m. at Sancet Field in Tucson.
