BERKELEY - The No. 9 Arizona State Sun Devils kept the No. 15 California Golden Bears off the scoreboard for a second straight game, with Cal falling 6-0 in the final game of the series. Sophomore right fielder Vince Bruno gave Cal a couple of scoring opportunities. Bruno doubled to lead off the sixth inning, but never advanced off second base. He also had a two-out single in the eighth, but once again failed to advance. Fellow outfielder, sophomore Darrel Matthews, also doubled with one out in the fifth. He also was stranded on second base. Arizona State plated six runs in the game, two of them coming from balks called against junior right-hander Dixon Anderson. Both times, the Sun Devils had runners at the corners and Anderson was called for a balk checking the runner at first, with the runner on third taking home plate as well. Anderson worked 5.2 innings, giving up five of the runs, four earned, walking two and striking out one. The Sun Devils sixth run was a solo home run hit in the eighth inning off junior right-handed reliever Logan Scott. The Bears, who fell 5-0 in game two of the series, were handed back-to-back shutout losses for the first time since the 2008 season when they were shutout in back-to-back games by the UCLA Bruins. With the loss, Cal falls to 24-11 (9-5 Pac-10). Arizona State improves to 27-9 (10-4 Pac-10). The Bears will be back in action on Monday, April 25, when they travel to Palo Alto to take on the Stanford Cardinal. First pitch is 5:30 p.m. The Bears will be back at Evans Diamond April 29-May 1 when they host the Oregon Ducks.
