BERKELEY -Junior first baseman Mark Canha hit a grand slam in the third inning and five different players had multiple hits as No. 15-ranked California defeated Pacific, 13-6, Wednesday (April 21) at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears, who finished with 13 hits against six different Tiger pitchers, improved to 23-11 overall. Pacific, which was plagued by five errors, dropped to 22-13.
The winning pitcher for Cal was junior reliever Brian Diemer, who improved his record to 1-1, throwing 4.0 innings with four hits, one earned run, one walk and five strikeouts.
The losing pitcher for the Tigers was starter John Haberman (1-1), who went 2.1 innings with three hits, four earned runs, one walk and three strikeouts, including giving up the grand slam to Canha in the third. Junior right-hander Kevin Miller started for the Bears, going 4.0 innings (six hits, two earned runs, three walks, three strikeouts).
Cal took control of the contest following Canha's round-tripper put the Bears ahead, 5-2. Cal added four more runs in the fourth inning, two runs in the fifth inning and single runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Sophomore left fielder Chad Bunting had tied the game at 1-1 with a solo home run off Haberman in the second inning. Sophomore right fielder Danny Oh was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI, while sophomore shortstop Marcus Semien and freshman third baseman Mitch Delfino were both 2-for-2.
Cal, which has won 11 of its last 12 games, will next face Bay Area rival and No. 22-ranked Stanford (18-13, 7-5), April 23-25 in a three-game Pac-10 series at Sunken Diamond. Game time for the series is 5:30 p.m. Friday, 1 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. Games can be heard on KALX, 90.7 FM.
