TUCSON, ARIZ. - The California baseball team gave up an unearned run in the bottom of the 11th inning to lose a heartbreaking 1-0 contest at No. 15 Arizona Thursday night at Frank Sancet Stadium in Tucson. Golden Bear sophomore right-hander Tyson Ross threw another gem, throwing 8.0 innings of shutout ball and sophomore reliever Matt Gorgen was solid, pitching 2.2 innings with one hit, one walk and four strikeouts. But, in the bottom of the 11th with one out, Gorgen walked C.J. Ziegler. Gorgen then forced Bill Reinhart to fly out to center, but Cal freshman center fielder Brett Jackson's throwing error allowed Ziegler to advance to third. Brad Glenn followed with the game-winning RBI to right center field. The Bears, who lost their ninth one-run game of the year, fell to 17-15 and 2-2 in the Pac-10. The Wildcats improved to 26-6 overall and 4-0 in league play.
The winning pitcher for Arizona was reliever Jason Stoffell, who threw the final 2.0 innings with no hits, one walk and two strikeouts. Ross and Wildcat starter Preston Guilmet had an impressive pitching battle. Ross threw 8.0 innings with four hits, no runs, four walks and five strikeouts. Guilmet pitched 9.0 innings with seven hits, four walks and six strikeouts.
Freshman right fielder Blake Smith (2-for-4, double), and sophomore shortstop Michael Brady (2-for-4) had two hits apiece for the Bears. Cal out-hit Arizona, 7-5.
The Bears will next play the Wildcats in the second game of the three-game series at 6 p.m. Friday, Apr. 6 at Frank Sancet Stadium.
