CORVALLIS, ORE. - Similar to the day before, the California baseball team jumped to an early lead, but yielded a big inning to No. 19-ranked Oregon State, losing, 6-2, Saturday in a Pac-10 game in Corvallis. The Golden Bears, who had a 1-0 lead when junior center fielder Brett Jackson hit a home run to left field on the second pitched of the game, fell to 15-13 overall and 3-5 in conference. Oregon State improved to 17-6 and 4-1 in league play. Cal had scored in the first inning in Friday's game, but ended up losing, 8-4.

The losing pitcher for the Bears was sophomore right-hander Brian Diemer (1-3), who threw 5.2 innings with five hits, six runs, three walks and a strikeout. The winning pitcher for the Beavers was right-hander Greg Peavey, who limited the Bears to four hits in 7.0 innings with two runs, two walks and seven strikeouts.

Cal scored the first run of the game when Jackson hit the second pitch of the game from Peavey over the left field fence. OSU came back with four runs in the bottom of the second inning behind a two-run single from Michael Miller and a two-run single by John Wallace off of Diemer.

The Bears scored a run in the fourth inning to get within 4-2 when sophomore shortstop Brian Guinn knocked in junior second baseman Jeff Kobernus, who had led-off the inning with a single to right, with a fielder's choice RBI. The Beavers extended their lead, 6-2, on John Tommasini's two-run double hit off of Cal junior left-hander Michael Bugary in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Besides Jackson's homer and Kobernus' single; junior right fielder Blake Smith and sophomore first baseman Mark Canha also had base hits for the Bears. Canha's single in the fourth inning extended his hitting streak to a career-high 16 games. Canha's leads Cal with a .413 average, nine home runs and 27 RBI. Junior left-hander Chris Petrini threw well in relief, going the final 2.0 innings with one hit, no runs, no walks and three strikeouts.

 

 

The Bears will next play OSU in the third game of the three-game series, Sunday, April 5 at 1 p.m. at Goss Stadium.
