SAN JOSE, CALIF. -The Cal baseball team saw its eight-game win streak come to an end, dropping a 3-1 decision Wednesday (March 20) at San Jose State. The Golden Bears, which hadn't lost since March 4 at Rice, dropped to 13-8 overall. Cal got its lone run on a solo home run by junior first baseman Devon Rodriguez in the fourth inning.
Freshman left-hander Jake Schulz (0-2, 4.0 innings, four hits, two runs, no walks, three strikeouts) gave up two runs in the third inning to the Spartans (6-15) on an RBI single by Ricky Acosta and an RBI double down the right field line by Michael Gerlach. Cal came back with a run in the top of the fourth inning on Rodriguez's deep home run to right center field off of San Jose State starter Daniel Chavez (1-1, 5.1 innings, five hits, one run, no walks, four strikeouts).
The Spartans added a run in the seventh inning on a bases loaded walk by Acosta off of Bear right-hander Trevor Hildenberger for the final 3-1 score. Both teams finished with five hits and Cal pitching struck out nine Spartan batters.
Besides Rodriguez, who also had a single in the sixth inning, another top hitter for the Bears was sophomore second baseman Brenden Farney, who was 2-for-3 on the day.
Cal will look to rebound when it travels to No. 11 UCLA (15-3, 3-0) for a three-game Pac-12 series. The opening game of the series if Friday, March 23 at 6 p.m. at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
