March 8, 2011 BERKELEY - Led by impressive offensive performances from Tony Renda, Austin Booker and Chadd Krist, among others, the No. 20-ranked Cal baseball team defeated Santa Clara, 20-5, Tuesday (March 8) at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears pounded out 21 hits against eight Broncos pitchers, with seven extra-base hits.Cal improved to 7-4, while Santa Clara dropped to 6-6. The Bears had actually trailed in the game, 2-1, entering the bottom of the fifth inning, but exploded for seven runs in the fifth and the 10 runs in the sixth inning to run away with the contest. Sophomore second baseman Renda concluded the game a perfect 5-for-5 with a home run to left field in the fourth inning, an RBI single in the fifth inning, had three RBI with a two-run double and a hit-by-pitch RBI in the sixth inning and an RBI single in the seventh inning. Senior left fielder Booker got the Bears big fifth inning started with an RBI triple and finished the day, 3-for-4 with a double, triple and three RBI. Junior catcher Krist was 2-for-4 with a two-run double in the fifth inning and a two-run single in the sixth inning. Junior right fielder Danny Oh (2-for-4, three RBI) and junior shortstop Marcus Semien (2-for-4, double, two RBI) also had multiple RBI days the Bears. The winning pitcher for Cal was freshman left-hander Louie Lechich, who replaced another freshman left-hander, Kyle Porter (4.0 innings, nine hits, two runs, one earned run, no walks, four strikeouts) in the fifth inning. Lechich picked up his first collegiate victory in relief, throwing 1.1 innings with two hits, three runs, two walks and a strikeout. The Bears next host the six-team Cal Baseball Classic (presented by Safeway) March 11-13 at AT&T Park, home of the 2010 World Champion San Francisco Giants. Cal will take on Louisiana-Lafayette on Friday, March 11 at 7 p.m., No. 19-ranked Rice on Saturday, March 12 at 7 p.m., and Long Beach State at 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 13.
