BERKELEY -The Cal baseball team won another extra-inning affair as sophomore second baseman Brendan Farney lofted a sacrifice fly to center field in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Golden Bears a 5-4 come from behind victory over Fresno State (3-9) Thursday (March 7) afternoon at Evans Diamond.
It was Cal's (6-7) third extra-inning victory at Evans Diamond this season as Farney's sacrifice fly scored junior right fielder Jacob Wark, who was hit by a Blake Quinn pitch to lead off the 10th. After Wark was hit, Bulldog first baseman Trent Garrison threw wildly in an attempt to throw Wark out at second base on a Chris Paul sacrifice bunt attempt. From there, freshman pinch hitter Mitchell Kranson laid down a perfect bunt single down the third base line to load the bases and set up Farney's game-winning fly out.
"Our team has worked too hard to give up on games when we are behind," said Cal coach David Esquer, who has seen his club produce four walk-off wins at home this season. "We know we need to keep on playing no matter what."
The winning pitcher for the Bears was junior reliever Trevor Hildenberger (2-1), who threw 3.0 innings, only allowing one hit with two walks and two strikeouts. Cal got a solid start from senior left-hander Justin Jones, who pitched a season-high 7.0 innings with seven hits, three earned runs, three walks and five strikeouts.
The Bears had trailed 4-1 in the contest before scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning on junior catcher Andrew Knapp's two-run double that went off the tip of Bulldog left fielder Taylor Ward's glove. Knapp again came through for Cal in the bottom of the ninth when he hit the game-tying sacrifice fly that scored junior shortstop Mike Reuvekamp. Reuvekamp had started the ninth inning rally with a one-out single to left field and then advanced to third base on junior designated hitter Devon Rodriquez's hard hit single through the right side of the infield.
Earlier, Reuvekamp had given the Bears their first run of the game with an RBI single in the fifth inning off of Fresno State starter William Munro (5.2 innings, two hits, one run, six walks, three strikeouts).
The Bears will next play the second game of the four-game series versus Fresno State, Friday, March 8 at 1:30 p.m. The March 9 and 10 games will begin at 1 p.m. at Evans Diamond. The Saturday and Sunday contests can be heard on KNEW 960 AM with Jonathan Okanes announcing.
