HOUSTON, TEXAS -

The Cal baseball program concluded its four-game road trip in Houston, Texas on a heartbreaking note, losing to No. 19-ranked Rice, 1-0, in the bottom of the ninth inning Monday (March 4) at Reckling Park in Houston. After the Golden Bears (5-7) had held the Owls scoreless through eight innings, Rice's Ford Stainback had the game-winning single off of Cal junior right-hander Ryan Wertenberger.

Sophomore right-hander Dylan Nelson, in his first start as a Bear, threw the longest outing of any Cal pitcher this season, going 6.0 innings with six hits, no runs, one walk and two strikeouts. Sophomore third baseman Chris Paul was 2-for-2 to lead the Bears at the plate.

Cal only managed five hits on the day as Rice's starter, Chase McDowell, threw a complete game shutout, with no walks and two strikeouts. Freshman center fielder Devin Pearson, junior shortstop Mike Reuvekamp and junior catcher Andrew Knapp singled for the Bears.

Five Cal pitchers limited the Owls to one run on 12 hits and forced Rice to leave 12 runners on base.

The Bears will next return home to host Fresno State in a four-game series, beginning Thursday, March 7 at 1:30 p.m. at Evans Diamond. The Friday, March 8 contest will also begin at 1:30 p.m., while the March 9 and 10 games will begin at 1 p.m. at Evans Diamond. The Saturday and Sunday contests can be heard on KNEW 960 AM.
