BERKELEY -The No. 25-ranked Cal baseball team held visiting Lehigh to eight hits and three runs while outscoring the Mountain Hawks, 28-3, in two games, winning 10-0 and 18-3 in a doubleheader Sunday (March 4) at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears, who pounded out 27 hits over the two games, including nine doubles, improved to 8-2 on the season. The Mountain Hawks from Bethlehem, Pa. dropped to 2-5. Cal had defeated Lehigh, 9-3, on Friday to complete the sweep.
On Sunday, senior right-hander Matt Flemer set the tone in game one by throwing 7.0 innings with three hits, no runs, one walk and seven strikeouts. It was Flemer's third strong start, improving his record to 2-0 with a 1.23 ERA and 14 strikeouts with only three walks in 22.0 innings.
Top hitters for the Bears in the morning contest were sophomore first baseman Andrew Knapp and senior center fielder Chad Bunting, who both had a pair of hits, including a double and three RBI. Freshman third baseman Chris Paul and freshman shortstop Brenden Farney also had nice games with the two newcomers each collecting doubles against Lehigh.
In game two against the Mountain Hawks, sophomore left-hander Kyle Porter saw his first action of 2012, throwing the first inning with no hits, no runs, one walk and one strikeout. Freshman right-hander Keaton Siomkin was impressive in relief of Porter, throwing the next two innings with no hits, no runs, no walks and three strikeouts.
Offensively in game two junior left fielder Darrel Matthews collected a team-high three hits with a double and RBI. Farney added another double and finished with three RBI. Knapp, junior second baseman Tony Renda and senior catcher Chadd Krist each collected two RBI apiece.
The Bears will take on another non-conference on Tuesday, March 6 when they host Creighton in a 1:30 start at Evans Diamond. After hosting the Jays, Cal travels to Nebraska for a four-game series against the Cornhuskers, March 9-12, in Lincoln, Neb.
