SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - Alex Rollin, Daniel Wolford and Matt Gorgen combined to shut out No. 17 University of San Diego, and senior second baseman Josh Satin had another home run, this time a two-run shot, as the University of California baseball team defeated the host Toreros, 5-0, Sunday afternoon in the final day of the University of San Diego Tournament, held at Cunningham Stadium. The Golden Bears, who were 3-1 in the tournament; also defeated No. 24 Fresno State, 14-4; fell to No. 5 Missouri, 7-5, and defeated No. 22 San Diego State, 5-3; improving to 5-1-1 on the year. University of San Diego dropped to 5-4.
Sophomore right-hander Wolford (1-0), a transfer from Long Beach State, picked up the win, throwing 4.1 innings with two hits, one walk and two strikeouts. He had replaced senior right-hander Rollin (3.2 innings, two hits, four walks, four strikeouts) in the fourth inning. Gorgen pitched the ninth inning with one hit and one strikeout. The three Cal pitchers limited the Toreros to five hits.
Offensively, Satin had another big day, going 4-for-5 with a two-run homer in the ninth inning. The Bears other runs came in fourth inning when Satin scored on a throwing error by San Diego catcher Logan Gelbrich and junior shortstop Michael Brady had a bases loaded walk. Cal added another run in the seventh inning on an RBI groundout to shortstop by sophomore center fielder Brett Jackson.
The losing pitcher was San Diego starter Kyle Blair (0-2, 6.0 innings, five hits, two earned runs, five walks, six strikeouts).
Satin finished the University of San Diego Tournament with impressive numbers, going 10-for-19 (.526) with eight RBI, including a key three-run homer Saturday versus San Diego State, and the clinching two-run homer Sunday.
