BERKELEY, CALIF. - Bolstered by the pitching of freshman right-hander Tyson Ross and home runs from Jordan Karnofsky and Brennan Boesch, Cal upset No. 12-ranked Long Beach State for the second day in a row, winning 4-1 Sunday at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears improved to 3-4, while the 49ers dropped to 4-2. Long Beach State had won the first game of the series, 7-6, Friday, but Cal came back to win game two, 3-2, and game three, 4-1.
Ross (1-1) won his first collegiate game, pitching 6.0 innings with six hits, one run, four walks and a career-high nine strikeouts. He gave up his lone run in the first inning on a wild pitch after giving up hits to the first two batters, but from that point on was able to stop the 49ers every time they threatened.
The Bears scored three times in the third inning off of Long Beach State's freshman starter Vance Worley (0-1, 6.0 innings, nine hits, four runs, one strikeout). With two outs in the third, sophomore designated hitter Jordan Karnofsky hit a solo homer to right. Senior Allen Craig followed with a double and scored on Brett Munster's RBI single to right. Josh Satin then singled and Boesch knocked in another with a single up the middle, scoring Munster. Boesch gave Cal an insurance run with a solo homer to right in the sixth inning, his third homer in the last two games. He finished the day a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBI.
After relief appearances by freshman Matt Gorgen (0.3 inning, one hit, no runs, one walk, one strikeout) and senior Jeremy Burchett (1.7 innings, no hits, no runs), senior reliever Alex Trafton earned his first save of the year, throwing the ninth with one hit, no runs, no walks and two strikeouts. Trafton had won Saturday's game in relief.

The Bears next travel to UC Davis, Tuesday, Feb. 14 at 2 p.m., before venturing to Waco, Texas for a three-game series versus No. 24-ranked Baylor, beginning Friday, Feb. 17 at 6 p.m at Baylor Ballpark.
