BERKELEY, CA - Behind the strong pitching of sophomore Adam Gold and home runs from junior James Holder and freshman Garrett Bussiere, the No. 26 Cal baseball team upset No. 9 ranked Long Beach State, 3-1 Sunday at Evans Diamond. Cal improves to 4-2 on the year, while the 49ers fall to 2-1. The Bears had lost to Long Beach State, 3-2 Friday and 5-1 Saturday.
Gold was impressive in his second start of 2004, improving his record to 2-0 by pitching 7.3 innings with five hits, one run, two walks and seven strikeouts. For the year, he has 17 strikeouts in 12.3 innings with a 0.73 ERA after striking out 10 BYU batters in 5.0 innings on Jan. 31. Junior Jesse Ingram came in in the eighth inning to earn his second save of the year, throwing 1.7 innings with no hits, no runs, no walks and a strikeout. Ingram now has 11 career saves, tied for seventh with Andy Wortham (1983-86) on the Cal all-time career save list.
At the plate, Cal scored a run in the bottom of the first inning on a RBI single by senior Chris Grossman, scoring David Nicholson, who had led the inning with a single off 49er starter Jason Vargas (0-1, 6.7 innings, five hits, three runs, no walks, five strikeouts). The Bears then gave themselves some insurance runs on back-to-back home runs from Holder and Bussiere off of Vargas in the fifth inning. It was Bussiere's first collegiate hit for Cal.
Long Beach State scored its lone run in the fourth inning on a RBI single by John Bowker. Bowker finished the day 2-for-3 with a RBI.
The Bears will next to UC Irvine for a three-game series, beginning Friday, Feb. 13 at 6 p.m. at Anteater Ballpark.
