Box Score

BERKELEY, CALIF. - Junior second baseman Josh Satin broke open a scoreless game with a three-run double off of UC Irvine pitcher Dylan Axelrod in the fifth inning to help lead the California baseball team to a 6-0 shutout of the Anteaters Sunday afternoon at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears improved to 2-1 and captured their 2007 season-opening series. UC Irvine fell to 1-2. Cal also had an impressive outing from junior right-hander Alex Rollin, who picked up his first collegiate victory by throwing a career-high 5.3 innings with two hits, no runs, two walks and three strikeouts.

The Bears got their scoring going in the fifth inning when senior shortstop Brett Munster and sophomore third baseman Michael Brady got on base via walks off of Axelrod (0-1, 5.0 innings, four hits, four runs, two walks, two strikeouts). With two outs, senior designated hitter Stephan Carlson was hit on the foot by Axelrod to load the bases, followed by Satin's three-run double over UCI left fielder Taylor Holiday's head. Cal first baseman David Cooper then scored Satin with an RBI single to right field. Cooper finished the UCI series 7-for-12 (.583).

The Bears added two more runs in the sixth inning on an RBI triple by freshman right fielder Blake Smith and an RBI single by Munster off of UCI reliever Wes Etheridge.

Meanwhile, Cal pitchers were sharp. Sophomore Craig Bennigson replaced Rollin and went 2.7 innings with two hits and one strikeout. Sophomore Matt Gorgen, whose twin brother, Scott, was the Friday starter for the Anteaters, pitched the ninth inning (two hits, one strikeout) for the Bears.
