SAN FRANCISCO, CA - Cal pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts, and the Bears were led at the plate by junior Brian Horwitz and sophomore David Nicholson, defeating San Francisco, 5-4, Tuesday at Benedetti Diamond. Cal evened its record to 2-2, while the Dons fell to 0-4.
Sophomore reliever Matt Swanson (1-0) picked up the win for the Bears, coming in in the second inning and pitching 2.7 innings with three hits, two runs, one walk and a career-high six strikeouts. Sophomore Jesse Ingram earned his first save of the season, pitching the final two innings with no hits, no runs, one walk and four strikeouts.
Cal also received a strong pitching effort from junior college transfer (Saddleback College) Aaron Swick, who came in with the bases loaded in the fifth inning and got USF's Ryan Hansen to hit into a double play to end the inning. Hansen flew out to center fielder Brad Smith, who had an outstanding throw to the plate to get out the Don's Joe Jacobitz. Swick went on to pitch 2.7 innings with no hits, no runs, no walks and two strikeouts. The Bears' 15 team strikeouts were the most team strikeouts for Cal since the Feb. 1, 2002 season opener at UNLV.
At the plate, Horwitz went 2-for-5 with a solo home run in the first inning and a two-run double in the third inning. Nicholson continued his hot hitting, going 3-for-5, while sophomore Justin Nelson had an RBI double in the third inning.
The Bears will next host Loyola Marymount in a three-game series, beginning Friday, Feb. 7 at 2 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
