BERKELEY, CALIF. - Led by a 15-hit attack, including a three-run homer by sophomore right fielder Ryan Hanlon and a 4-for-5 day by sophomore first baseman David Cooper, the California baseball team defeated UC Irvine, 10-4, Saturday afternoon at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears, who improved to 1-1 on the season, also received some solid relief pitching from sophomore Dane Ferguson and junior Nick Nunez. After the Anteaters won Friday's contest, 4-3, Cal and UC Irvine will play the rubber match on Sunday, Feb. 4 at 1 p.m. at Evans Diamond.

The Bears broke open a 4-4 game by scoring six runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by senior shortstop Brett Munster's RBI double, an RBI pinch-hit single by junior Taylor Grigsby, an RBI single by junior second baseman Josh Satin and Hanlon's three-run homer - the first homer of his college career. The losing pitcher for the Anteaters was freshman reliever Christian Bergman, who came in in the sixth for starter Daniel Bibona and gave up two hits, three runs with one walk in an inning of work.

Nunez (1.3 innings, no hits, no runs, one strikeout) got Cal out of a jam in the seventh inning when he replaced Ferguson with the bases loaded and was able to strikeout Cody Cipriano to end the inning. Freshman Sean Watson pitched the ninth and induced pinch-hitter Francis Larson to hit into a double play, and Hanlon made a leaping catch over the right field wall on a ball hit by Taylor Holiday to end the game.
