BERKELEY, CA - The California baseball team scored four runs in the eighth inning, but it was too little, too late as the Golden Bears lost its 2005 season-opener, 5-4, to Pacific Tuesday at Evans Diamond. Cal made a furious comeback, on RBI singles by senior James Holder, freshman Josh Satin, sophomore Chris Errecart and sophomore Brennan Boesch, but Tiger pitcher Josh Schmidt was able to strikeout freshman Jason Corder with the bases loaded in the eighth to stop the Bears' rally. Schmidt (1.3 innings, two hits, no runs, no walks, four strikeouts) then struck out the side in the ninth for his first save of the season.
The winning pitcher for Pacific was junior right-hander Luke Massetti, who pitched 6.0 innings with only two hits, no runs, two walks and a strikeout. The losing pitcher for the Bears was junior starter Alec Harris, who went 2.0 innings with three hits, three runs and three walks. The Tigers' other runs came off Cal reliever Joe Todoroff (2.7 innings, three hits, two runs, one walk, two strikeouts), but four different Bear relievers (Travis Talbott, Eric Dworkis, Jeremy Burchett, Matt Swanson) were able to limit Pacific to only two hits and no runs in the final 4.3 innings.
The Tigers scored three runs in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Jesse Kovacs, a wild pitch by Harris and a RBI single by Anthony Jackson. Pacific added another run in the third on a solo home run by Matt Berezay in the third and a RBI single by Brandon Gottier in the fourth. Berezay was the big hitter for the Tigers on the day, going 3-for-5 with a home run, double and a single.

Cal only had two hits through the first seven innings - a single by Corder in the third and a lead-off single by redshirt freshman Mike Van Winden in the fourth. Corder then started the Bears' rally in the eighth with his second hit of the day.
Cal will next host UC Irvine in a three-game series at Evans Diamond, beginning Friday, Feb. 4 at 1:30 p.m.
