BERKELEY, CA - Led by the pitching of sophomore Joe Todoroff and the hitting of sophomore David Nicholson, the Cal baseball team defeated UNLV, 8-7, Saturday at Evans Diamond. The three-game series is now tied 1-1 after the Bears victory. The Rebels won the first game of the series, 9-6, Friday.
Todoroff earned his first collegiate victory, pitching 5.0 innings with three hits, three runs, three walks and two strikeouts. Nicholson went a career-best 4-for-4 with three runs. The losing pitcher for UNLV was starter Jake Vose (3.0 innings, eight hits, seven runs, one walk, two strikeouts).
Cal performed well at the plate, scoring three runs in the first, two runs in the second and three runs in the fourth inning. Sophomore Justin Nelson had a key two-out, two-run double in the first inning, followed by an RBI single by junior designated hitter Scott Cheo. Freshman Allen Craig and junior Brian Horwitz had back-to-back RBI singles in the second inning. In the three-run fourth, freshman Jeremy Burchett hit a two-run homer to left field and Horwitz knocked in his second RBI of the day with a one-out double.
The Bears had to hang on to win the game as UNLV scored three runs in the top of the ninth on a three-run homer by Ryan Ruiz off of Cal reliever Jesse Ingram. Finally, Ingram was able to get Fernando Valenzuela to line out to shortstop to end the game.
Cal will next face UNLV in the third game of the series, Sunday, Feb. 2 at 1 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
