Brian Schulman is his sixth season as the head athletic trainer for the California baseball program. Schulman, 30, already has several years of experience in the athletic training profession, having worked for the San Francisco 49ers, at Fresno State and UC Santa Barbara, and for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He is also the athletic trainer for the Golden Bears' 2006 and 2007 national champion men's water polo program.
Prior to joining the Bears in March of 2004, Schulman was an intern assistant athletic trainer for the San Francisco 49ers from June 2003 through February 2004. He came to the 49ers from Fresno State, where he worked with the football and baseball programs while earning his masters' degree in exercise physiology in 2003. As an undergraduate at UC Santa Barbara, Schulman was a student athletic trainer, working with the baseball, men's basketball and men's soccer programs. He graduated from UC Santa Barbara in 2001 with degrees in political science, and health and exercise science. Schulman had an internship with the Los Angeles Dodgers in the summer of 2000 and is also a certified strength and conditioning specialist.
A native of Encino, Calif., Schulman and his wife, Megan, reside in Dublin with their son, Luke, born Oct. 30, 2009.
This season Schulman will be assisted full time by graduate intern athletic trainer Shane Besedick, who attended Long Beach State where he where was an athletic student trainer as an undergraduate, working primarily with the men's water polo and men's basketball teams. Besedick is currently working towards his Master's degree in Exercise Science and Health Promotion at California University of Pennsylvania.
