No. 12 Arizona State Downs California, 3-1
TEMPE, Ariz. - No. 12 Arizona State (29-17, 14-12) defeated California (17-29, 3-20) 3-1 in front of 3,914 fans at Packard Stadium Saturday.
Ryan Mills (5-2) picked up the win, pitching his second complete game of the season. Mills struck out eight batters, while allowing just four hits. Jon Shirley (2-6) was the tough-luck loser, pitching seven strong innings of six-hit ball.
Greg Halvorson led off the fifth inning for ASU with his sixth home run of the season, giving ASU a 2-1 lead. The Sun Devils added an insurance run in the eighth inning on Andrew Beinbrink's sacrifice fly that scored Rudy Arguellas. ASU opened the scoring in the first on an RBI double by Dustin Delucchi.
Arguelles finished the night with two hits and two runs scored for ASU. Ivan Lewis had two hits for the Golden Bears, one being a solo home run in the third inning that knotted the game at 1-1.
The Sun Devils face Cal Sunday for the final game of the three-game series.
