Golden Bear Baseball Tops Saint Mary's, 8-7
BERKELEY, Calif. - The University of California baseball team broke a nine-game losing streak by defeating by visiting Saint Mary's, 8-7, Tuesday at Evans Diamond. Cal improves to 14-26 overall, while Saint Mary's goes to 13-20.
Cal's sophomore shortstop Brian Oliver hit an RBI double off of Saint Mary's reliever Eric Siegel (2-1, 2.3 innings, five hits, one run, one walk, one strikeout) in the bottom of the ninth to lead the Bears to the 8-7 come-from-behind win. After Saint Mary's had tied the game in the top of the ninth on an pinch hit, RBI single by Scott Wright, Cal came back when senior first baseman John Furstenthal had a one-out single, followed by Oliver's game-winning double.
The winning pitcher for the Bears was junior reliever Doug Nickle (2-4), who pitched the ninth inning with three hits, one run, no walks and a strikeout. The leading hitters for Cal were Oliver and Furstenthal. Oliver finished the day 3-for-5 with a double and four RBI. He had a key two-run single in the seventh inning to give the Bears their first lead of the day, 7-6. Furstenthal was 3-for-4 and hit his first collegiate home run with a solo shot in the third inning.
The leading hitters for Saint Mary's were Tom Callen, who was 4-for-4 with three RBI; and Dan Graff, who was 4-for-5 with an RBI.
Cal will next host No. 12 ranked USC for a three-game series at Evans Diamond, beginning Friday, Apr. 11 at 2:30 p.m.
