Cal Baseball Pounded by Stanford, 20-5

BERKELEY, Calif. - The University of California baseball team was defeated by visiting Bay Area rival Stanford, 20-5, Sunday at Evans Diamond. Cal falls to 13-19 overall and 1-10 in the Pac-10 Southern Division, while Stanford improves to 20-7, 7-1 in league. The Cardinal had defeated the Bears, 6-5, Friday at Sunken Diamond.

Stanford scored every inning except the second and seventh innings and pounded out a season-high 24 hits against five different Cal pitchers on the way to the 20-5 victory.

The winning pitcher for the Cardinal was sophomore starter Chad Hutchinson (2-0), who pitched 5.7 innings with four hits, only one earned run, seven walks and nine strikeouts. The losing pitcher for the Bears was freshman starter Brad Steele (2-2), who only pitched the first inning with four hits, five runs and one walk.

The leading hitters for Stanford were Edmund Muth (4-for-6, double, five RBI), Jody Gerut (3-for-4, double, three RBI), Chris Clark (3-for-3) and Jay Pecci (3-for-6 double, two RBI). Top hitters for Cal were Juan Hernandez (3-for-4, two doubles) and Brian Oliver (2-for-5).

Cal will next travel to Stanford for the third game of a three-game series, Monday, Mar. 24 at 7 p.m. at Sunken Diamond.
