Feb. 23, 1997 Cal Baseball Pounded By Oregon State 15-2Berkeley, Ca - The University of California baseball team was defeated by visiting Pac-10 Northern Division foe Oregon State, 15-2, Sunday at Evans Diamond in Berkely, CA. The Bears fall to 9-8 overall, while the Beavers improve to 5-4-1 on the season. Cal had defeated Oregon State, 8-6, on Friday and 14-2 on Saturday. The winning pitcher for the Beavers was sophomore right-hander Mark Newell (2-0), who gave up just two runs (one earned) on two hits in 7.0 innings. Oregon State backed Newell with 16 hits, including home runs from Mike Leone (two-run homer in the fifth), Rob Lake (two-run homer in the eighth and Ryan Lipe (solo home run in the ninth). Lake had come off the bench in the fifth inning to go 3-for-5 with five RBI. The losing pitcher for Cal was junior starter Douge Nickle (1-1), who went 2.0 innings, allowing three hits, three runs, two walks and two strikeouts. The leading hitter for the Bears was sophomore catcher Jason Hill, who hit a solo home run in the sixth inning and finished the day 1-for-2 with two RBI.
