Jan. 31, 1997 Bears Roll by 'BowsHONOLULU -- Cal center fielder Curtis Johnson went 2-for-4, knocked in four and homered, as the California Golden Bears smashed out 16 hits in defeating the Hawaii Rainbows, 11-3. Shortstop Brian Oliver collected four hits and first baseman John Furstenthal had three as the Bears (2-1) scored in every inning after the third, except for one. Although Bears' starter Jim Vorhis was lifted after three innings, his relief was absolutely superb. Brad Steele (1-0) and Doug Nickle combined for six shutout innings, allowing just two hits and one walk. Hawaii starter Robby Robinson was effective through five, but Dusty Bergman (0-1) didn't have the same fate, being tagged with six runs in three innings. Greg Millichap went 2-for-3 and had an RBI for the Rainbows (1-8). Cal goes for a sweep in the three-game series on Saturday.
