Elissa Riedy Finishes 52nd at NCAA Championships

GREENVILLE, SC - University of California junior Elissa Riedy finished in 52nd place Monday at the 1997 NCAA Cross Country Championships on the Furman University Cross Country Course. Riedy, who qualified as an individual participant, turned in a time of 17:36 in her first NCAA Championships appearance.

Riedy (Fremont/Mission San Jose HS) is the first Cal woman to compete at the NCAA Championships since Tenaya Soderman finished 37th in 1993. Riedy is only the third Golden Bear woman to run at NCAA's in the decade of the '90s, joining Soderman and Sabrina Hann, who finished 21st in 1990.

Defending NCAA Champion Stanford was edged out by BYU for the team title, 102-100, in the closest team finish since 1987. Villanova's Carrie Tollefson was the top finisher in 16:29, de-throning defending NCAA champion Amy Skieresz of Arizona, who ran the course in 16:39.
