Golden Bears Run In Golden Gate Park

BEARS RUN IN THE PARK: The California men's and women's cross
country teams travel to their fifth competition of the season,
competing in the San Francisco State Invitational in Golden
Gate Park on Sunday, Oct. 11.
HEAD COACH: Cal head coach Tony Sandoval is in his sixth season
at the helm of the combined men's and women's cross country
program, after heading up the Bears women's program since 1982.
He is assisted for the second consecutive season by Richie
Boulet, a six-time track and cross country All-American at Cal,
and Magdalena Lewy, a former Bear cross country runner and
All-American trackster.
NEVADA INVITATIONAL (9/6): The Bears finished second to
defending NCAA Champion Stanford in both the men's and women's
competition at the Nevada Invitational. On the women's side,
junior Elissa Riedy's finished third (18:49), followed by Lori
Riedy (5th, 19:40), Genevieve DeBose (8th, 20:01), Tiffany
Hansen (10th, 20:11), Oasii Lucero (15th, 20:26), Amber Pierce
(19th, 20:57), Ally Lombardi (20th, 21:06). For the Golden Bear
men, sophomore Peter Gilmore claimed fourth place (21:23),
followed by Chris Maier (8th, 21:50), Mike Blair (9th, 21:59),
Peter Egerton (11th, 22:09), Simon Mudd (12th, 22:18), Nick
Rattray (13th, 22:30), and Chuck Gatchell (18th, 23:31).
FRESNO INVITATIONAL (9/20): The Cal women took third place at
the Fresno Invitational, while the Cal men's "B" team claimed
fifth place. The team champion in both men's and women's races
was BYU; the BYU women finished third at last year's NCAA
Championship. Junior Elissa Riedy finished in second place
(17:40), but was the top collegiate finisher. She was followed
by Genevieve DeBose (11th, 18:32), Ally Lombardi (21st, 19:24),
Tiffany Hansen (29th, 19:37), Oasii Lucero (30th, 19:43),
Amanda Tomei (31st, 19:43) and Logan Hiroshima (40th, 20:17).
For the Cal men, Bill McMorran was the top finisher (17th,
26:46), followed by Steve Immel (24th, 27:12), Chuck Gatchell
(29th, 27:23), Brendan Kelly (35th, 27:53), Ross Conklin (37th,
28:05), and John Collin (39th, 28:17).
STANFORD INVITATIONAL (9/27): The Cal women took fifth place at
the Stanford Invitational, while the Cal men placed seventh.
The team champion in both men's and women's competition was
defending NCAA Champion Stanford. For the Golden Bear women,
junior Elissa Riedy finished 8th (17:31), followed by Lori
Riedy (34th, 18:35), Genevieve DeBose (41st, 18:41), Tiffany
Hansen (65th, 19:09), Oasii Lucero (78th, 19:19), Amanda Tomei
(101st, 19:42), and Amber Pierce (114th, 20:00). On the men's
side, sophomore Peter Gilmore finished 7th (24:58), followed by
Chris Maier (48th, 26:20), Simon Mudd (50th, 26:21), Peter
Egerton (56th, 26:28), Steve Hansen (64th, 26:35), Bill
McMorran (72nd, 26:49) and Nick Rattray (89th, 27:11).
AGGIE INVITATIONAL (10/4): Cal sent its "B" teams to the UC
Davis Aggie Invitational, where the women took third place and
the men were sixth. The Reebok Aggies won the women's
competition, while the Chico Track Club claimed the men's
title. Junior Lori Riedy posted the first individual victory of
her collegiate career, winning the race in 17:54.4, her first
sub-18:00 clocking. She was followed by Ashley Zongker (27th,
18:56), Amber Pierce (31st, 19:07, Ally Lombardi (44th, 19:30)
and Logan Hiroshima (61st, 19:54). The men were led by Mike
Blair (32nd, 26:13), followed by Chuck Gatchell (33rd, 26:14),
Chris Coffee (43rd, 26:26), John Collin (58th, 26:44), Brendan
Kelly (72nd, 27:03) and Ross Conklin (89th, 27:42).
