SACRAMENTO - On a blustery Saturday at the Sacramento State Open, where wind-aided marks dominated the sprints and jumps, Golden Bears won seven events, including Nick Ridge, who became the third Cal high jumper to clear seven feet this season.
Ridge came close to seven feet at the Big Meet April 14 when he topped out at 6-11.75. But at Hornet Stadium, he jumped 7-0 even to claim the event over Sacramento State's Anthony Williams (6-9.50) and Cal's Harrison Steed (6-7.50). Steed has a best of 7-0.25 this year, while Brian Carmichael paces the squad with a lifetime best of 7-2.25, also set at the Big Meet.
In the women's high jump, Kristin Rimbach prevailed with a season-best 5-8.75, one inch higher than her previous mark of 5-7.75 from the Stanford Invitational in early April.
All of the marks posted in the sprints and horizontal jumps had wind readings above the allowable 2.0 meters per second. The breeze helped Chase Wheeler to a runner-up finish in 10.46 in the men's 100 meters. He has a legal best of 10.62.
In addition to the two high jumpers, Cal's other victors on the afternoon were Colin Holtson in the men's 800 (1:56.47), Ryan Holmes in the men's 400 hurdles (season-best 54.19), Hammed Suleman in the men's long jump (23-10.00), Isaac Dan in the men's 12-pound hammer (187-6) and Angelica Weaver in the women's 400 hurdles (59.59).
The majority of the Golden Bears remained in the Bay Area to continue preparing for the Pac-12 Championships May 12-13 in Eugene, Ore.
