SACRAMENTO - Brian Carmichael set a meet record in the high jump with a clearance of 6-11.75 to highlight Cal's performances on a cool, blustery Saturday at the Hornet Invitational.
Carmichael, who owns a PR of 7-1.50 in the event, matched Chico State's Michael Souza at 6-11.75, but he was declared the winner based on fewer misses. The mark broke the old meet record of 6-9.75 by Montana's Jas Gill in 2006.
Several other Golden Bears placed among the top three in their respective events on the afternoon. Dash Oliver was third in the 100 meters with a wind-aided 10.75, while Jonte Grant took third in the long jump (23-0.50), Taylor Kientzel was third in the triple jump (47-5.25) and Sullivan Parker was third in the shot put (52-8.25).
For the women, three athletes finished among the top three, led by Nicole Larson's runner-up performance in the pole vault (12-7.50). In addition, Gia Trevisan was third in the 400 meters (55.73) and Gianna Fernandez took third in the high jump (5-5.75).
The Bears concentrated on the sprints and field events at the invitational, as only Matt Peterson competed in running event longer than 400 meters, taking ninth in the 1500. All six of Cal's competitors who helped the Golden Bear women place 15th at the NCAA Indoor Championships last weekend took the meet off to rest.
