SEATTLE, Wash. - Junior Collin Jarvis set a Cal indoor record in the men's 5000 meters, becoming the first Golden Bear to break 14 minutes, while sophomore Kelsey Santisteban moved up to the No. 4 performer spot in school history in the women's 5000-meter race in Friday's action at the Husky Classic.
Jarvis crossed the line in 21st place, but his time of 13:56.36 beat the record of 14:03.06 set by Kari Karlsson at the MPSF Championships in 2010 and placed him ninth on Cal's career performer chart. All of the other times ahead of Jarvis were run outdoors.
Racing in her first indoor event for Cal, Santisteban, an All-Pac-12 honoree and NCAA qualifier in cross country in the fall, was 10th in the invitational 5000 meters in 16:01.70. The time puts her fourth in school history under all conditions and makes her No. 2 on the indoor list behind only teammate Deborah Maier, who ran 15:29.24 last winter.
The Bears had nine entries in the men's 200 meters and were led by freshman Kyle Ezold's 22.28 time, which was good for 10th place out of 44 in the field. Charles Saseun (22.29), Tom Blocker (22.33), Randy Bermea (22.45) and Daniel Davis (22.71) all equaled or lowered their previous PRs, while Ezold, and Surovell raced in the event for the first time at Cal.
The Bears also sent a contingent of sprinters and field athletes to the Don Kirby Elite Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., who came through with several impressive performances.
In the women's shot put, Victoria Owers came within two-and-a-half inches of the Cal freshman record, posting a mark of 52-10.25 on her sixth attempt. Still, the distance puts her fourth on the school's all-time performer list as the best result for the Bears since the 2005 season.
Freshman Shelby Ashe also established a PR in the weight throw, going 62-2.25, which was good for sixth place.
In the long jump, Hammed Suleman edged up his indoor PR in the long jump to 24-8.25 with a third-place finish (he's topped 25 feet outdoors), while Ray Stewart placed third in the men's 60-meter hurdles in a season-best 7.87 seconds.
